Another Opening, Another Show! Science Hill’s student choir starts off the Autumn season with a spectacular blast from the past; a 1950s concert!
Science Hill has 3 student choirs: Chamber Choir, Treble Choir, and Topper Choir. The topper choir includes the Freshman singers, who learn how to read music and sing various songs. Treble Choir ranges from 10-12th grade and focuses on learning more difficult pieces to deepen their knowledge of music. Chamber choir, on the other hand, is meant typically for seniors or experienced underclassmen. This choir holds higher expectations, and “it’s definitely faster paced,” as said Lillian Ellis from Chamber Choir.
The three choirs joined on stage to sing “Another Opening, Another Show” (the opening theme from the musical “Kiss Me, Kate.”) It was the perfect beginning for this concert from the 1950s! Near the end of the song, confetti popped in the air to add to the spectacular performance. Then, the Chamber and Treble choir exited the stage to shine the spotlight on the Toppers for their song, “Friendship.”
“Friendship” by Cole Porter is a short but perfect description of what friends do for each other. Topper also took this song more than singing, they performed the song by interacting with one another as if they were helping out a good friend.
After Topper’s “Friendship” was Treble’s “Blue Skies.” “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin held a jazzy melody with snaps for the beat. Berlin made this song for his daughter as a Christmas present, and Treble portrayed having a positive outlook for the future but still deeply attached to reality.
From “Blue Skies,” Chamber boys with their black suits and Hawaiian accessories were a contrastingly comedic display for the audience. They sang “Marry a Woman Uglier than You” by The King’s Singers.
After the boys, the Chamber girls sang “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” by the one and only Marilyn Monroe. The girls wore classic black dresses with long white gloves, elegant from head to toe.
Next up was the Topper choir with yet another song, “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” This famous song was composed by Duke Ellington, with lyrics by Irving Mills. Topper sang this jazz song with a sweet tanginess that smoothened out in harmony. In addition to their interactive hand motions, this performance was just adorable!
After Topper performed, the Treble choir sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You”, famous from its’ musical set in the 50s, Grease! Their passion for this song seemed to resonate throughout the room. A song about a hopeless girl in love, Treble Choir seemed as if they were the girl themselves!
And then, the Chamber choir performed “Razzle Dazzle” from yet another famous musical, Chicago! The girls in glamorous dresses and the boys with their polished black suits, razzled and dazzled the audience brilliantly! Lillian Ellis said that behind the scenes, she had difficulty in “getting her costumes in order” and “getting songs memorized” which seemed to be the case for all members of the three choirs. Even so, their efforts shined through, and performed a spectacular performance on stage.
Finally, all three choirs rejoined on the stage once more. They sang “We’ll Meet Again”, a song made during World War II. Chamber, Treble, and Topper sang this beautiful song together with a voice of hope. It was a wonderful sight to see! For the last time, the audience erupted into applause of amazement! The singers dispersed from the stage to their loved ones as the concert came to a close. Science Hill, let’s meet again!
