The community of Johnson City and the students at Science Hill High School got into the Halloween spirit with a fun-filled event that brought together students, kids, parents, and staff. The event was held Thursday, Oct. 26 on school grounds and featured a range of booths run by some of the clubs, classes and sports teams here at SHHS. This included oSocial Wise, Asian Culture Appreciation, Spirit squad, Ap Lit Class, Fccla, Plant Science, Cosmetology, Science Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wrestling, Baseball. The highlight of the event was the line of Disney princesses that were standing by the exit handing out candy and taking pictures with the kids. Shout out to the dance team for making that happen! The event was also a hit with students who came out to support their peers.
The feedback from people who went were all quite positive, like a quote from Kadence Warren, a 9th grade student. She said “This is really family friendly, and there are a lot of kids…a lot of joy and happiness all around”. Another comment made by Elijah Sowell, a 9th grade student at SHHS, his opinion on the event, “It’s really fun, it’s a good place for people to get together and celebrate Halloween…I wish there wasn’t so much open space, maybe more activities would be better for next year.” Many people there agreed that the decorations could use some more effort but overall the turnout was amazing this year with over 2000 people attending.
With so many people up and down the halls, and in Grand Topper Hall there was buzzing everywhere with a huge number of awesome costumes! While talking to the principal, Josh Carter, he had many things to say about the event. “We have had an amazing turn out, not only with kids from SHHS coming to work booths but the community…elementary and middle school kids coming out, it’s just been an amazing turn out.” He also mentions the importance of the event to the community, “It provides the community with a safe place to come and trick or treat. It gives the kids a chance to come to SHHS and get familiar with it before they start highschool. It also gives our students a chance to serve our community, which is something we want to do is to have our kids be able to come and help their community.”
Many people have mentioned having the event be longer, with so many people coming out to participate having the event run longer may be a good idea. With this being the second year SHHS has held a Trunk or Treat the feedback from the event is sure to keep us excited for next year! Overall, the Trunk or Treat at Science Hill High School was a huge success, bringing together the school community for a fun and festive evening.
