Following the devastating end of the 2023 girls’ soccer season, a saying began to circulate within the Science Hill soccer community. The phrase “burn the teepee” became popular among the girls, referring to their desire to beat the Dobyns Bennett Lady Indians the next time they faced each other.
On September 10th, the Lady Toppers soccer team took on the Lady Indians at home, winning 5-0. Although this appears to be an easy victory, the preparation in the weeks leading up to the match was filled with strategic practices aimed at preventing the previous season’s results from coming true again.
During the 2023-2024 soccer season, Science Hill and Dobyns Bennett (DB) met head-to-head in four matches. Two of these were regular-season games, while the other two were played in the district tournament. Both teams ended up 2-2 in wins and losses, with DB winning the districts after an unfortunate penalty kick. This then sent the Lady Toppers up against Bearden High School—a difficult matchup that denied them a chance at the state cup.
Now, Science Hill is determined not to let that happen again. The excitement in the days leading up to the match filled the girls with energy. On the day of the game, four of the five goals were scored by different players: Lillie Marshall, Lauren Yobst, Brenna Overbay, and Allie Connor. Two of the five goals resulted from their own goals by DB, showcasing the relentless pressure the Lady Toppers exerted on the Lady Indians—enough to have them scrambling back toward their own goal.
This is not the last of the rivarly between Science Hill & Dobyns Bennett. The two teams will meet again soon (Date & time TBD). Come support our Lady Toppers and wish them good luck as their season comes to a close!
